Driver: San Francisco is no longer playing catch up. As of the release of GTA3, Driver because sort of a second-tier crime-sim series, always playing catch up to the industry-shattering revelations of Rockstar's signature series. The game innovates on previous installations in the series, offering greater freedom of movement and some exciting action possibilities along the hilly streets of the City of Brotherly Love. To talk about the plot too much would be to give away some amazing twists, but let's leave it at this: you play as a character who winds up in a coma with sequences taking place both in modern day and years ago before he was put into the coma. So it was quite a surprise for gamers when Driver: San Francisco turned out to be one of the greatest sleeper hits of the year. Seen by many as a too-little-too-late response to Grand Theft Auto 3, the game was mostly met with lukewarm reviews and featured lackluster action and atmosphere. Granted, it is nothing like what GTA offers, but it is here.Driv3r was not the most well received game of the series. You have story missions that move the game forward, but there is also a nice amount of side content here. The game features tons of missions for you to do as well. There are many different vehicles for you to drive as well as weapons to use and you can cause as much mayhem as you want. The comparisons with GTA are because in this game, you have an open world and you are free to pretty much do what you want. The voice acting is not exactly stellar and some of those cutscenes are awful, but there is a gritty charm here that is hard to explain. Is it an original tale filled with unique and interesting characters like Vice City or San Andreas? Well no, but Driv3r does have a cool, undercover cop trying o fit in with the bad guys to take them down kind of thing going on which works better than many people give it credit for. The story of the game is not as bad as some people will tell you.
